What are the best shows to see in New York City?
My mom is taking me to New York City for my 18th birthday, because I haven’t really had a “celebration” since I was in 5th grade. Having a Christmas birthday sucks…
Anyway…she wants to take me to see a show, like a Broadway show or a play. I’ve seen Wicked, so I don’t need to see that again. I kind of want to see Phantom of the Opera, but I want some more ideas on other good shows. If you’ve seen any, what shows did you like and why? Thanks.
Did you like Wicked? If you’re not super familiar with Broadway’s shows, you have to decide for what you are looking.
Are you a historical musical fan? You’ll want something more like Phantom, the Lion King, or Mamma Mia! then.
Some of the newer ones are equally as good and may themselves become classics one day: Billy Elliot, Next to Normal, Memphis.
I’ve heard good things about the West Side Story revival.
If you’re just looking for a fun night out, I’d suggest (from seeing 3 times on Broadway last year) Rock of Ages. Just a very enjoyable show where much of the audience ends up singing/clapping along.
Whatever you do, I’d suggest doing some research before you go. (Whether or not you would be uncomfortable seeing the show with your Mom, how long it runs, etc.) Are you going during the winter? Because, if you’re in a quandry between a few shows, if you go at a warmer time or there’s an unseasonably pleasant winter, you could try to go to the TKTS booth and see if you can get discounted tickets to a show. Also, don’t be afraid to try off=Broadway shows. There are some gems there too. (Former Broadway staple Avenue Q is not playing in an off-Broadway theatre.)
Most importantly, enjoy the experience; it’s so much fun on Broadway!
