Where should we eat before seeing a Broadway play?
We are going to see Wicked in June and want to go to a nice dressy place before the 7pm show. We’ve never been to NY before, so we need suggestions.
Chez Josephine on 42nd Street and Ninth Avenue – owned by Jean-Claude Baker, son of the famous Josephine Baker. Nice place to dress-up for – good food, live entertainment – excellent staff – they always make you feel so important and they will be sure to serve you quickly if you tell them you have theatre tickets. They start serving dinner at 5. (Note: many restaurants in Times Square don’t start serving dinner until 6 – that won’t give you enough time to enjoy your meal – make sure you check the restaurant’s hours). This is a great place, but it isn’t that close to your theatre; they are open late, so you can eat here after the show.

Mont Blanc on 48th and Eighth – has an excellent prix fixe (about $26 and they start serving dinner at 4:30 – great desserts here). This is a Swiss restaurant, so there are a lot of French and Italian dishes.

One of my favorite restaurants is very close to your theatre.
Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful before the theatre. The service is excellent and they always see that we’re out in time for the show. Costa Del Sol is Spanish – not Mexican. For $25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices – AND IT’s GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad – (I never order salad when there’s another choice, so I can’t comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego – from Galecia Spain – a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees – at least six different shrimp dishes – my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp – HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans – large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee – the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or icecream. As if all this food weren’t enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $6 more ($3 each)
