My choices are as follows:
Symphony Orchestras in ranking order are:
(1) Vienna Philharmonic
(2) London ”
(3) London Symphony
(4) Berlin Philharmonic
Opera Companies:
(1) La Scala
(2) Covent Garden, London
(3) Vienna State
(4) New York’s Metropolitan
For all of the orchestras, I would say for their: technological expertise; musicianship and sonority of the overall ensemble.
For the opera companies: their continuous, more or less uninterrupted seasons; overall management and directorialship; sufficient funding; and capability to employ the best singers.
Sounds kind of perfunctory, doesn’t it? Hope you can do better. Let’s have at it!
