Mary Poppins Broadway?
Ive just recently come back from seeing Wicked in LA and immeadiately fell in love with Broadway. I was looking and I think the next show I would want to see is either Wicked(again) or Mary Poppins. The thing is though, Mary Poppins is too far away( I live in California ) So I was wondering if Mary Poppins will ever come to California or somwhere closer than New York. Can someone help me?
Wicked is wonderful, you’re right. Most successful Broadway shows develop touring companies that will eventually play L.A. There is no question that musical theatre is superior in London and New York, but there are many, many musicals playing right now in L.A. and Southern California. Don’t just wait for Mary; go see “George Gershwin Alone,” at the intimate and superior Geffen Playhouse in Westwood; or “Spelling Bee” at Wadsworth; “Jersey Boys” at the Ahmanson downtown. “Barnum” is in Mission Viejo and “Hairspray” is in San Diego.
Professional musicals are the most expensive kind of theatre, of course. If that is a factor, then try out various good amateur theatres near you; also, some people just love high-school musical productions (ugh!).
Maybe just maybe, it’s not just musicals that have you so spellbound, but theatre itself! Let’s hope so! Though certainly not as good as either New York or Chicago (or London), L.A. non-musical theatre boasts a huge range of prices and styles and subject matter and quality (not always in direct proportion to the price, by the way). Start with comedy! Have fun!
