“Mamma Mia!” is a musical show based on ABBA’s songs. In Italian, “Mamma Mia” means “mommy of mine”. The original music composers for ABBA, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, have made a significant contribution in the production of this Broadway musical.
The evergreen songs like ‘I Have a Dream’, ‘Take a Chance on Me’, ‘Dancing Queen’, and ‘Voulez-Vous’ make this story of love and friendship more captivating.
“Mammia Mia” is all about a girl who is on the look out for the identity of her father. During her wedding day, all hell breaks loose when three men enter the scene. They are from her mother’s past!
How the girl, on her wedding day, handles the situation when all of a sudden she discovers three fathers is beautifully presented in this show. The show has managed to go houseful every night.
The name of the show “Mamma Mia” is taken from the group’s smashing hit album of 1975 by the same name. However, the show’s story has no relation with the group’s story. The only connection is that Agnetha and Bjorn as well as Benny and Anni-Frid tied the knot in the spring of 1969. The two couples went to Cyprus for a vacation the following year. During this time, the foursome gave their first performance together. This is how ABBA was born.
The hit numbers include ‘Thank You for the Music’, ‘SOS’, ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Super Trouper’, and ‘The Winner Takes It All’.
The show is such a huge success that it is being made into a movie at the Pinewood studios in England. The shooting for the movie started in mid June 2007. It will be released in November 2008. The movie is going to attract a huge crowd, as it stars the ex-James Bond Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, who play the leading characters of Donna and Sam.
So, all those who have been missing the James Bond can see their favorite actor in a different role in the movie “Mamma Mia”!

The premiere of “Mamma Mia” was held at the Prince Edward Theatre in London in 1999.
This musical won five Tony awards and two Drama Desk awards in the year 2002.
Thereafter, the show was shifted in 2004 to the Prince of Wales Theatre.
In the following year, the show, with 1,500 performances, dominated all other shows of Broadway running at that time such as “the King and I”, “The Sound of Music”, and “Damn Yankees.
In Las Vegas, it was played for the thousandth time!
“Mamma Mia” has become the 24th longest running musical shows at Broadway.
So, do not expect to get tickets on the spot from the box office. It’s not wise to wait in the long line either. You are not sure whether there will be seats left when your number comes.
