How much Is a Globe Theatre Ticket When Shakespeare Was Alive?
In the 1590’s you could get a standing place for 1d. (one penny) or a seat for between 2d. and 4d.
Since a semi-skilled labourer could earn 4d. a day, a theatre ticket was expensive but affordable for all but the poorest.
Shakespeare’s other theatre at Blackfriars was all seated, with prices starting at 4d. and going up to as high as 1/- (one shilling). This was really out of the range of anyone below the level of a guildsman (a man with his own small business).
