Booking Gigs – Everything You Should Know
Playing in your drummer’s garage may be fun and creatively fulfilling but if you want a career in music, you need two things: to get known and to get paid.
Getting known is the easier of the two. Most high-wattage bands REM spent years as local favorites before getting signed to their first record deals.Street fairs, open mike nights, school carnivals and battle of the bands competitions are great ways to build a loyal local fan base. Simply contact the organizers and offer your services.
As your face base increases in size and enthusiasm, promote yourself to local bars and clubs that pay for entertainment. If you don’t have a video to show them, the owner may want one free gig to see if you can pull in a crowd. And if your band is just starting out, it’s a good investment. But only do it once. If they like you enough to ask you back, they like you enough to pay you. Some places pay a flat rate; other will give you a percentage of the door if they charge a cover. As you become better known and more popular, payment is negotiable.
Most bars and clubs do not have hired hands to if you need help setting up and breaking down your equipment, make sure to bring some friends along to act as your roadies.
If your band’s style is appropriate, send out flyers to local party supply stores and churches for private party and wedding reception gigs. These events usually require a more mainstream appearance and music selection.
Remember: a music career is as much about marketing as it is the music. Building a relationship with fans is vital to any successful music career. So take the time to set up a web site. Wherever you play, have a sign-up sheet so people who want to receive notifications about your next gig can give you their email or twitter contact information. The more people who show up to your paying gigs will greatly increase the likelihood you’ll be asked back to perform again.
