MGMT Tickets – MGMT Headlines New Jersey’s Bamboozle Festival
Along with Weezer, Matt & Kim and Girl Talk, MGMT headlined the second day of New Jersey’s Bamboozle Festival on Sunday, May 2. Rolling Stone reports that the glam-prog act performed tracks off their recently-released sophomore album Congratulations but capped of their set with smash single “Kids” off their debut effort Oracular Spectacular. “Hey Weezer, are you playing this song, too? It’s our song,” the guys posed a question to the next headliner; Weezer did reinterpret MGMT’s “Kids” during their set, cutting it with Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”
Before performing at Bamboozle, MGMT kicked off festival season with a gig at the Coachella Festival at Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. on April 17. Following performances by the xx and Hot Chip, MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser delivered a set-list heavy on the hits, like “Time to Pretend” and “Electric Feel.” The following weekend, MGMT appeared on the Gabourey Sidibe-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live (on April 24). Billboard.com reports that the duo performed two new tracks, “Flash Delirium” and “Brian Eno.”
MGMT’s Congratulations was easily one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of 2010. MGMT’s sophomore album and the follow-up to 2007’s Oracular Spectacular wasn’t supposed to surface until April 13, but after it leaked online it late March, the band released a statement on their official website saying, “Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.” Rather than releasing traditional singles, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser previously told NPR that they want radio stations to simply choose which nine tracks off Congratulations they like best and play those on air.
Although MGMT earned a Best New Artist nod at the 2010 Grammys and ample airplay due to singles like “Kids” and “Electric Feel” off Oracular Spectacular, the Brooklyn-bred duo decided to take a risk with Congratulations. Speaking to Billboard.com, VanWyngarden revealed that executives at Columbia Records were initially worried about the different direction the group went with on Congratulations.
“They started off saying it was a great album and that it was beautiful, and they loved it. But then they said, ‘We just need to make sure that this is what you want’—like, ‘Are you sure his is what you want to put out there?’” recalls VanWyngarden. MGMT didn’t hold back and Goldwasser told Billboard.com of the album, “It might not be something as immediately catchy as the stuff on our last album. We think of this album as something that will grow on people after a few listens.”

On May 11, the band will also be performing on the popular “Live on Letterman” music series. JamBase reports that MGMT will perform on the Late Show with David Letterman before delivering a webcast concert from the Ed Sullivan Theater.
