What would I need to do to get into community theatre?

I didn’t get the chance to be in any plays or musicals in high school, partly because I was too shy, and there were a few other reasons. I was in the “pit” for one of the musicals that my high school did and I think it would be fun to be a part of a musical or play in one of the local community theaters. Any suggestions of things I should work on….will I need previous experience?

No experience required. You do want to have a good audition, which means that you would be smart to collect materials well-suited to your talents and work on your presentation before the next auditions are announced. I understand many actors have 2 or 3 audition pieces they use.

You want to find monologues from plays which you think you can deliver well, short things which run 1-3 minutes. Plays are rarely found online, so you’ll need to visit a bookstore or the library.

Rehearse and memorize, then videotape yourself and look for flaws. (There will be plenty. It’s normal.) Practice your monologue in front of real people, and teach yourself to project your voice. You are not being your somewhat shy self, remember–you *are* the character you are portraying.

An acquaintance of mine was the first person to hire Phillip Seymour Hoffman for an acting job–in community theatre.
