Classical Music Concerts
Why are there so few female conductors of classical music performances?
Most conductors of classical music concerts throughout history seem to be men. I am wondering why this has been the case? Is there a scientific explanation? Does this phenomenon have to do anything with the differences in brain biology between the sexes?
There was a similar question on women composers last week: I answered and got an avalanche of thumbs down, then incredibly ended up with the best answer. So, I can only repeat myself.
I honestly don’t know the reason but if there’s one it’s surely the same why all women cook daily and all chefs are men.
To avoid another avalanche, I mean that social conditions don’t allow daily practice to evolve into specialistic excellence. With all the money running around on phenomenons, nobody would be so foolish to intentionally dump a great female conductor or composer, it may be cynical but that’s the way it is.
I was thinking of Clara, Schumann’s wife, perhaps the greatest piano player in the first half of 19th century, or Fanny, Mendelssohn’s sister: she wrote such wonderful romanzas that Queen Victoria herself wanted to sing. Mendelssohn, accompanying the prolific queen, didn’t have the courage to admit that they weren’t his but hers, and not out of evil (he adored her), just because it wouldn’t be accepted. Nearly 170 years after, is life so very different ??
