Chelsea Flower Show Tickets 2010
Kate Gould Garden Designer
Kate Gould has been exhibiting at Chelsea since 2005, but her love affair with the show started in the 1980s when she attended on the public days.
Royal Horticultural Society What kind of garden do you have at home?
Kate Gould This is a terrible admission but my garden is tiny and messy and full of bits of old Chelsea gardens. It should be designed but I never seem to get around to it. I have been promising myself now for two years that the next job will be the garden but it never seems to happen. Maybe next year!
RHS What’s your favourite plant or planting combination?
KG It depends on the season. For summer colour I have a very soft spot for members of the Salvia family and there is nearly always a Geraniumfor almost any aspect or time of year.
RHS What’s your favourite style of garden design?
KG I do quite a lot of work in towns so neat, structured gardens are a favourite. Using industrial materials softened by planting also interests me as with a little bit of thought it is possible to green the inner cities and create places people can enjoy at all times of the year.
RHS What do you enjoy most about Chelsea?
KG Chelsea is some of the hardest work and most fun you can have, even if its pouring with rain you can be safe in the knowledge that there are at least several hundred landscapers on site in the same boat and all just getting on with it. Knowing that everyone is in it together and all working for the same thing makes a big difference and makes 16 hour days bearable.
RHS Best Chelsea experience?
KG The build in 2009 was just a joy. A great team and a great atmosphere made for a stress-free build. Standing back with the guys on Sunday afternoon with the garden finished and the sun shining, knowing that they were really pleased with what they had achieved was a lovely moment.
RHS Your top tip for surviving Chelsea?
KG A really good landscaper and the ability to laugh when things go wrong – they will go wrong and there is no point stressing.
RHS What do you do once Chelsea week is over?
KG Go back to work for a rest! I have never taken a break after Chelsea but if time allows next year I am going to turn my phone off and hide somewhere warm for a week.
RHS Chelsea in 5 words?
KG Fun, exhausting, rewarding and usually muddy!
