Best and worst jukebox musical to play on Broadway?
Just in case anybody is not heard of the name Jukebox Musical, you can read about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jukebox_musical , lot of plays like Jersey Boys, Movin’ Out, and Mamma Mia! have opened on Broadway and is contuing on Broadway while others like All Shook Up, Ring of Fire, and Lennon have opened and closed on Broadway, mainly due to the decline of ticket sales. But which 2 plays would you say is the best, and the worst of Jukebox muscials, and why do you pick those 2 plays as the best and worst.
The three you mentioned (Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, Movin’ Out) are generally regarded as being the best of the genre.
For the worst, “Hot Feet” (featuring the songs of Earth, Wind, and Fire) got heavily negative reviews and closed after less than a week of performances. (The other three you mentioned weren’t much better.)
Trivia note: for the strangest example of a Jukebox Musical, there was a play called “Girlfriend” based around the songs of Matthew Sweet (adapted to tell the story of two gay male lovers) which played off-Broadway in the mid-90’s (before any of the above examples made it big.) It actually got decent reviews, but was probably way too ahead of it’s time to have any mass appeal.
