How do you get a musical onto Broadway?
My friend and I are writing a musical just for fun, but maybe one day we’ll actually like to have it on Broadway. How do you get it on there?
you have to interest a producing company or get your own financing.
To get in on broadway requires a union crew
All your actors, director, stagehands, dancers, musicians are union.
You get a room large enough to rehearse it. Sometimes you rent a back street theater with a stage sufficently large to stage your play.
You hire an accompanist, usually a pianist, if it’s a musical and a choreographer and a director.
Then you cast your actors from the union ranks or you pay fines if you use non union ones
actors and dancers can’t work to your music or you have to pay them.
You are allowed two free call backs per actor after that you pay them $400 a day for each call back.
Once you sign an actor they are paid $1,900 a week minimum, don’t expect to get a big actor for that little.
Dancers and singers are paid less. $500+ a week
Extras can be non union if they don’t have lines or sing or dnace. They can be paid $40 a day.
The director is paid a minimum of $4,000 a week or a flat fee for a period of time plus they get a royalty from ticket sales while the show is in first run.
Once sets and lighting start you have to employ not less than 19 crew members from IATSE to build, move sets and adjust the lighting. They make anywhere from $800 a week to $2,000 a week each.
Once you start full music you must employ 14-15 musicians minimum plus a conductor.
Musicians are paid a minimum of about $500 a week each
Once you start getting it into shape you look for a broadway theater that is due to close it’s show soon. You pay option fees to the top contenders for the next slot avaialbe.
You then generally take the show on the road and do it off boardway in previews.
It might spend two years in previews but you charge for tickets now and hopefully that covers costs.
you may switch directors after a given length of time and re-organize the show.
Preveiws can be anywhere.
Seattle, Chicago, Indianopolis, Toronto
You rent a theater, take the show there and see how well it plays and how the local critics like it.
You wait for your slot on boardway
When it happens you have a week or so to move in, take over the theater, get things technically ready and then open.
You have to pay the per seat fee to the theater owner during that time which is about $5-$10 per seat for a given rate of time
A 5,000 seat theater costs you $25,000 a per time frame to rent minimum.
Once you open you are charging $50-$125 per seat
Once you open the key actors may increase in pay
The directors job is over generally a month after opening but they get a royalty off ticket sales during that run on broadway
Your crew and cast must remain the same size through the run of the production on broadway.
Then you last as long as ticket sales out weight the costs of producing the show.

oh, away from home previews you have to provide apartments or hotel rooms for all union people. You can use locals for some jobs.
It’s the producer’s job to fanagle things, so they might offer Holiday Inn a share of the play in exchange for very good room rates.
This is why you might see Holiday Inn ads, and Buget Rent a Car ads in programs. It’s a promotional consideration.
It’s product placement.
Andrews Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice indepdently produced a performance at their school of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat and then wrote a few pop songs that made the radio
Based on this they got Robert Stigwood to producer their opera Jesus Christ Superstar and it went plantinum so Stigwood decided to go into the stage play business and produce that on Broadway
It did quite well and as a result of his ownership package he also got Joseph and decided to do it as a broadway offering and it took close to 8 years to get it there.
I approached them about doing it as a TV special but they weren’t interested and Peter Brown told me they were planning it for broadway so I knew how many years it took to get it there based on my contact with him and how long before it hit broadway.
I also saw the off broadway preview shows listed in some areas.
Joseph was basically their Master’s Thesis in college.
